Sheila Shimmick, principal at Heritage Middle School (HMS), was honored as a Distinguished Administrator by the Texas Music Educators Association. TMEA recognizes upper-level school administrators across the state who have been instrumental in preserving quality music education programs on their campuses and in their districts.
Superintendent Dr. Robin Ryan, Director of Fine Arts Dr. Paul Sikes and HMS administrators and teachers surprised Shimmick with the news on August 23, 2022 during the honors band class. Josh Smith, HMS director of bands, nominated her for the award.

I will continue to support it and our band and choir directors at Heritage Middle School as they do amazing work with our students. I feel extremely fortunate to have received this award and to work at HMS. Go Broncos!”
In her nomination, she is described as “a champion of students and a master leader who enables great teaching. Her philosophy of creating opportunities for music teachers and students has been a cornerstone of why the arts at HMS have thrived and grown.”
Smith added that “it is such a joy to see her at our performances, always supporting our students and community.”
Last year, the HMS band participated in 32 separate community performances. Shimmick truly encourages exceptional music education on her campus through her relentless support of the arts, and is described by Smith as one who “sees the importance of the arts in schools and truly understands the life-changing impact they have on students.”
